Sexing golden Comet chicks

I have chicks hatching in the incubator and was wondering how to tell their sex. I read somewhere the darker coloring were females and the lighter ones are male. Is there any truth to this theory? There's one with a dark stripe on it's head

Where did you get the eggs? We’re they labeled as sex linked hatching eggs?

I got them from someone who was giving them away and said they were Golden Comet. I cannot guarantee they're 100% sex-linked since they were free off of her landlord's farm.

They may have been confused. If a golden comet laid the egg, the resulting chick will not be a golden comet even if it’s bred with a male golden comet. They are a “hybrid” bird created by crossing a pure RIR rooster and a pure white bred white hen with specific genes such as a Delaware or a Leghorn. Unless the person you got them from has heritage breeds and really know what he’s doing, they are probably not sex linked (aka golden comets, red stars, black stars). And you will be able to tell immediately by just asking what his rooster / hens are... if they are not pure RIR and White whatever , they are not golden comets or sex linked.

You’re welcome! I know this because I tried to sell GC fertile hatching eggs... I had a RIR roo and 6 White Leghorns.... all chicks came out white so I freaked out and thought I literally had 15 cockerels. It was here just recently that someone explained my sex linking did not work bc I used cheap production breeds from Tractor Supply and they simply had had the particular silver gene necessary bred right out of them. So.... epic fail. They are still cute AF though and will lay tons of eggs, and since they are leghorn mix I could tell by 2 weeks my genders from the comb size.
What you now have (as do I) are barnyard mixes. Check back in a few weeks with full body pics and we can help you with genders. Good luck with you babies!
