Sexing Silkies. Lots of Help Required

I have some pics of my White Silkie Roo and a few pullets I believe. It really is very hard to sex them until they are about 5 months old. One reason is because some people say that if they have "Phyllis Diller" Hair on top they are pullets, but I found that is not always the case (50/50). If they have smooth hair on top they are supposed to all be cockrels. Again not true. But when they are about 4 to 5 months, you can really see pink or red rose shaped knot on the nose at the back (the comb) and that is usually a good indication that is a cockrel.

I tried to get pictures as clear cut as possilbe to show you the difference. I do not know what happened to my really good picture of a white rooster but these will do.

The first two pictures are of a rooster. Do you see the spikes of hair coming off the head? Those are streamers and only males have them.

This is a hen, notice, no streamers off the head, it is round, like a ball.

Keep in mind though these are show birds and likely hatchery ones will not be like this but the roosters will still have the streamers.

I ordered buff silkies from Ideal and I started when Mine were young to try to tell gender and took pictures as I could and followed along with which I thought was which.

I believed I had to roos and 1 pullet. sure enough I was right and now I have pics to look back on for comb growth develoment. Which has been harder with my other silkies because the buffs were hatchery quality.

So I can only use this method on hatchery quality silkies.

Here ya go.
