I usually use shavings for older birds but never 3 day olds.. we are moving them to a pretty big brooder (we have 13) so I wanted to know if they would swallow them or get hurt if I put shavings in now?! Thoughts?

I bought 7 two day old chicks two weeks ago and have had them on wood shaving from the start, and even tractor supply had them on wood shavings when I bought them, it's very safe...

We put them in the brooder and they started pecking at the wood chips is that normal? I don't want them to swallow any...

Pecking at things is how they figure out what's edible and what's not. Just like a young child puts everything in their mouth, so do chicks. Don't worry. They'll be fine.
