I am guessing this is the correct forum to post this question..we are currently brooding our chicks indoors with pine shavings but our coop and run are floored in sand...do I need to break the chicks in slowly (i.e. putting shavings in the coop on top of the sand at first) or simply drop and run so to speak ?

I started mine in the coop on shavings. Changed it all out to sand 3 weeks later. Released them to the run at 8 am and made the switch. I keep their crumbles in the coop, so they went in and out all day and not one of them complained about the sand

Seriously, the change went smoothly and I didn't see any chicken behavior that even suggested they noticed the change.

Gotta tell you, it's the best thing I ever did for myself. Cleaning is an absolute snap. Literally takes me 5 minutes every morning to sift the poo, refill food and water. Maybe the girls don't care, but I'm lovin' the sand.
