Went through my first molt ever with my chickens (was their first molt too). I probably should have looked up how long chickens molt for but I thought.... how long could it last. It felt like it lasted FOREVER! I would go out and it looked like my chickens got attacked everyday with all the feathers! Since none of my friends are interested in anything chicken related ... I had to share with people that enjoys chickens. My buff FINALLY laid an egg!!!! She had been stringing my along for about a week... I would see her sit in the nesting box and then leave. I would here her pre egg song occasionally. Today I noticed a difference. I saw her hustling back into the coop and run into the nesting box. I patiently waited .... and finally got an egg!!!!! How can I be so excited about an egg?!?!? Now just waiting on my other 4 to lay their eggs... again.

Is the first molt the longest or is it always the same about of time frame? Just curious for next year

make sure they have a high protein diet right now. Making feathers is hard on the body, and that's why they stop laying during that time. It will help get them back on their egg laying feet.

It actually can get longer the older they are.
Higher protein, lower calcium while molting will help them grow out feathers and re-bolster their bodies faster.
