My nephews 10 & 7 years old are going to help us make our shed into a coop for our pullets. We are going to work on it every weekend. (so far we just have a door that isn't done yet) One thing about it that is bothering me is whether to paint the outside or not. I think it should be painted but a couple of other people are saying to leave as is. What would YOU do?

Why are they saying to leave it as is? For security reasons in case chicks try to eat the paint?! Or just esthetics?

Just for the looks, I would paint it :) Maybe the paint used for metal is more toxic though, I don't know about that, I am using latex paint for mine, but not sure that would work on yours.

Is it metal? I paint all my sheds, just for looks. I just read somewhere that chickens can see color. So it might help them identify their home if it was. You can give it a really cool name with paint too:)

It's my family that says not to paint. Not because they know anything about chickens but because they think it looks good, like a rustic feel. Yes, the shed it metal. I don't think I can stand to look at it as is so I think I am going to paint the outside. Especially knowing how good the chickens see color. This shed was originally painted just with exterior house paint, not the kind made for metal. It never peeled, just ended up rusting from neglect. Is there a particular color chickens like, I wonder? Our house is grey/blue but the coop doesn't have to match it. I'd like it to be a FUN color but don't know what to choose.

Chickens are not going to peck flakes of paint off and eat it. They might try to guzzle itbfrom the can while your painting. Painting the inside will Make it easier to clean.it is already a rusty old shed. Paint the inside to help
Make it lighter inside also.

Hahahah I really wonder if they have a favorite color :) Don't they say that Orange/red brings up the appetite (for humans). If you are raising meat chickens.. ;) Or if you want your rooster to be calmer, try green!
(lol, I don't really believe in that, but I find it helps me decide on a color when I hesitate. Check this if you are interested)

Thinking about painting mine too! I don't have a lot of $ to spend, so I buy paint that wasn't mixed properly for customers. They sell a gallon for 10$ CAN over here, a lot less than a color I would select myself.

Was wondering if I should paint it brown and green to "camouflage" with the rest of my trees, garden, grass, wood and etc. OR paint it a cute color so it stands out. I guess it depends on the paint I can find ;)

I hope they don't have a fav color. Picture all the squawking and pecking going on if they can't agree, lol But I agree a semi gloss which is washable helps inside..

My nephew Josh and I painted the walls of the shed/coop. Also painted a dresser nest box and made a new roost. Still working on it, still need to paint the ceiling and finish the outside. We both like the inside paint the best. Paint was free old cans mixed together. It worked! :)

Looks nice! I have a small wood building as a banty coop but i did not paint it. Really about personal choice. I do want to add while i love the design of those doors, are they for overnight? the chicken wire is not secure and can be gone through rather easily, by coons etc

Looks great otherwise! clever re-use of the dresser.
