Can someone help shed some light on this for me? Using the Brinsea Eco 20 Incubator.
When getting my 'bator ready to set the eggs, my Brinsea Spot Check Thermo, put through the vent hole, read 99.7º at mid egg level and my built in glass thermo read around 99.3º. Close enough... Great! This is with no eggs in the 'bator yet.

When I put the eggs in and check it now 4 hrs later, the built in is up to 98.5º+/- (which I understand because I put in cool eggs). I also know not to adjust anything for the first 24hrs... But here is the weird thing - when I put the Spot Check Thermo in through the vent hole down to mid-egg level, not touching anything, I am getting readings of 101º or more... Why the discrepancy? Before eggs being set they were reading the same, and now they have gone in opposite directions. What could be causing this? Very weird!!!!

This is my second hatch, and I had decent results just going by the built in glass thermo the first time with it reading 100º+/-, so my gut tells me to do the same this time around. But I still want to know why this is happening??????????????

I did that too! I just decided to trust the one that came with the bators...and guess what...My hatches have NEVER been better. I think you will be safe to trust the glass one. Mine are dead on!

Yeah - that's my plan... Thanks for chiming in. All I can guess is that the eggs being in there some how messes with the accuracy of the spot check because without the eggs and when not in the turner, the two thermometers read almost identically.

It may be the difference in the location of the 2 thermometers. To adjust for the change in temp from the cool eggs the heating elements are warming up and more hot air is being pushed down, it may be the spot the thermometer is reading is where the fan is pushing the heat down, and the non digital is a bit slower to read.

101 is still safe, give it time, once the eggs are warm and its stabilized then check again.

edit to add:
I have a spot check and a few other types of thermometers, the spot check and the gqf "meat thermometer" are my favorites for accuracy and ease of use.
