Help! This morning, my BCM hen had a dangling poop. I actually noticed it because my buff brahma was hanging out by her bum making concerned noises. I thought it was a wet poop she was trying to pass and gently tugged to help move it along. However, I'm afraid that she may have had a prolapsed vent and I accidentally pulled out her organs! Please see the picture below and help me understand if I just killed my favorite hen.

Her appetite and energy level have been normal and she allowed me to pull this out with no fuss. Afterwards, she just walked away and seemed fine (so far.) Her crown is red and she has been laying normally this week so far.

Looks like a malformed, soft shelled egg. Those can be hard to pass, so she's probably relieved. I would just keep an eye on her if she's acting normally now. Could just be a glitch. Make sure she has access to oystershell for calcium all the time (not all birds will get enough from layer feed) and watch to see if her next egg is normal. Sometimes these can take awhile and another egg can already be in the pipe, so another egg might come soon.

Super helpful, thank you! I am expecting an egg today. My girls do have access to oyster shells but it is raining and I can probably top off with some freshies this afternoon. I'll keep an eye on her and make sure she's okay!
