Been sheet mulching to turn our lawn into gardens, as well as to just beat back the ubiquitous grass. I dont play football (soccer) so wont feel the loss. Plus I'd like to replace the whatever-grasses-they-are lawn with grasses and grains I know and can eat. We alternate layers of nitrogen bearing material with carbon yielding -- all organic compostables. Same in our chicken coop. After a few weeks of high nitrogen chicken $#!* build up I lay down a layer of straw or deciduous wood chips. Deciduous cuz I plan to use the deep litter in our gardens come spring time and those chips break down faster than conifer wood chips, but mainly deciduous is more alkaline or neutral than acidifying conifer chips. I only want to balance the ph to more acidic where I'll grow mainly berries. Chicken doo-doo is a great compost accelerator. This is our first year with all this garden space. I look fwd to getting on a roll.
