Shelf in pen, would they hang out on it?

I'd like to add some roosts/shelves in the outdoor pen. It's 6' tall and I feel like I need to do something with all that vertical space. Do chickens like to sit up on stuff during the day or would they prefer just scratching around on the ground?

They will go up there and roost for sure. And where they go, you get poop.

I have two roosts made from tree branches in my coop. I think they are pretty cool. Yet my chickens all hang out on top of the nesting boxes, bunched in a pile. It's over 100 here most days and they still bunch up at night. Crazy birds.

Mine roosted on a 7 foot platform at 6 weeks, until they got too big to fit.

Any distraction or spot they can hang out other than on the ground will give your birds something to do and keeps the happier
