So I posted earlier today about one of my hens having thin shelled eggs. Today I found an egg that felt and looked like a water balloon, no shell?? Why would this happen? all my hens get oyster shells and the other eggs are always nice hard shells.

this is not uncommon, especially in younger chickens. make sure that the chickens have plenty of calcium, as that is what the shell is made of. if you have a dog, you should give him the egg, it will love it

Nasty looking, aren't they.

It happens sometimes, even if the birds are getting all kinds of calcium supplements. With the high production rate of eggs in a bird's system, I guess it's just natural for a quality control issue to arise once in a while. If it happens repeatedly, it probably indicates some kind of physiological problem with the bird's reproductive system or some other health issue.

I got one the other day too...but no membrane at all. Looked just like when you crack open a shell into the frying pan. My girls have only been laying for a month and I think they are still working out the glitches. They are on egg-maker crumbles and have oyster shell free-choice.

I did get one of those membrane looking eggs last Fall ... definately bizzare - but it only happened one time - I think it is probably just a fluke

I wouldn't get too worried unless it keeps happening

We got one that was laid last night. I attributing it to stress because we havent had one in a long time and we moved these two hens to a new pen yesterday. It took them a while to settle and figure everything out, and this one was laid sometime between 9pm last night at 6 this morning.

It happens, and as long as its occasional I dont think it is a problem (especially in younger ones from what Ive read). If she's laying them that way consistently, I'd probably re-evaluate her health and diet and such because something may be out of whack.

I had a hen lay one three days in a row, then today I found a hen dead in the coop floor. She died overnight and it was a very cold night. I'm not sure if it was this hen laying those eggs I'm just putting it together because I didn't have one today. Any ideas on any kind of connection? I keep them supplied with oyster shell so I'm not sure what could've happened. She was about a year old and a rhode island red.

I'm having the same issue with one of my hens. I have not identified which one has been doing it, but it has been a full week with shell-less eggs, a few that have been layer with out a shell or whites. They have been laying for about two months now, all are gold-laced wyandottes. I'm going to start working on identifying which one is the culprit tomorrow and was wondering if there was anything other than oyster shells that I can give them all to help.
