Shellless Egg

Pardon me if this topic has been addressed here before. I'm usually on the Design/Feeding forums. I have eight Red Star sex links. I have been getting 7 - 8 eggs per day with no shell problems. The hens have grit and oyster shell available. I feed Blue Seal crumbles. Tonight when I went out to close the coop up for the night, one of the birds had just laid an egg with no shell whatsoever. When the rest of them saw it, they gobbled it up right away. The hen seemed ok and not ill. I got seven eggs today. My guess is that this is the one bird that did not lay this morning. Is this anything to be concerned about?

I too freaked the first time I found one. I have 9 sex linked and probably have gotten 4-5 "rubber eggs" since last Sept. It's nothing to worry about. It happens on occasion. Your doing a great job! I don't know what your expecting from your girls but I've been absolutely amazed at their production. 1368 since Sept. 7th. My first year with chickens so I'm no pro but I've already learned a lot thanks to the good people here. Especially the people on our state thread, I owe them a lot! Your doing nothing wrong just give em a kiss and a hug and tell them it's alright.

I've seen rubber eggs before on the farm. This has been the first time I have seen one without a shell at all. I really wasn't freaked out as much as I wondered if this was an indication that I needed to change anything or if this was an indication of a health issue. Thanks for the advice.

Someone laid a shell less egg today along with a rubber egg right next to it.

I think both eggs must have slipped out of the same girl because they were laid right next to the food dish, no where near a nest or roost. I quickly scooped them up and tossed them out so no one could discover how tasty they are.

Similar to my experience. Though I have a couple of birds that lay in the corner and/or under the roost, this one was over near the waterer. Didn't get to it fast enough to really inspect it before the rest of the girls pounced on it, but I figured that was the natural "pecking order" if you will.

I, too, found a shellless egg today... I have 3 BO that are great layers. They have been laying since Nov. and I haven't had any egg issues until today.

The wolf moon was full recently. Maybe we can blame it on that!!
