Shield eggs from incubator light?

I've rebuilt my DIY incubator to use a light bulb instead of heat cable. I installed a small cardboard light shield to keep the eggs out of direct light, but now I'm having trouble with air flow and uneven temperatures. Is blocking the light necessary? Has anyone come up with an elegant solution for this problem?
