I have a 5 year old African Grey parrot
A friend that owns a pet shop told me to give my bird some tequila before shipping her to Florida to calm her down
My vet said that he would sedate her for me
has anyone ever shipped a parrot cross the country before
if so can you answer this question for me

I received a parrot once, but I don't think she was sedated. I had to goto the airport to pick her up and I believe the sender had to go to the airport to send her. So she was only really in transit for a few hours.

Tequila seems iffy to me.

you might try a parrot site. maybe someplace like the gabriel foundation would know.

we also have a cocketeil but we can drive her
the parrot on the other hand would get us kicked out of hotels along the way
i found a few sites that said yes to the tequila
the parrot will be in transit for 9 hours if that helps
with the sedation question

so you are shipping her to yourself?

I might just brave the motels with her. she might be quiet in unfamiliar surroundings. but either way.....shipping could be quite traumatic

We drove from Boston to CA with a parrot and he didnt make a peep in hotels.. was too freaked out.

I've never heard of the tequila.. I think I would search for breeder's online that ship all the time and ask them what they do... whatever you do don't get it sedated from the vet AND do the tequila ...

Also make sure you find a direct flight , I drove from sacramento to San Francisco to put a dog on a direct flight since there werent any in Sac. I shipped from SF to Detroit. I didnt want to risk a stop in an airport where the temp may affect him.

Too bad Pet airways isnt going that way yet....

Good luck!

Did you ever find a way to get your chickens there??

every single morning since she could talk she wakes me up and says mom
mom
mom, over and over again cause thats what my girls say
i didnt think about the unfamiliar surroundings thing
but i am driving with three of my silkies as well
and a 100 pound lab
we had a little set back with our trip cause i had to stop my plans cause a friend died and i had to come back to ca for a few weeks
gosh i am not looking forward to this move
i would be shipping my animals to myself or a responsible person on the receiving end

maybe i should save the tequila for me and make some margaritas anyone for a margarita

this move is making my arm pits sweat
i just dont trust anyone with my animals
now i have to worry about someone drugging my parrot to shut her up on the plane if she freaks out or something

I live in the rocky mountains...Whenever my great grandmother had to go over a high mountain pass in the car she would always sit in the back seat and take a mason jar with bourbon in it. sometimes we need to be medicated a bit.

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE YOUR PARROT TEQUILA OR ANY ALCOHOL!!!!

THIS IS POISON TO THEM AND THE DOSAGE CAN'T BE CONTROLLED!!!

I've been an exotic bird person for many years and study the newest treatments, etc. My close friend is an avian certified vet and this comes directly from her....No alcohol of any kind!

African Grey's are particularly intelligent and subject to trauma. If there is any way to re home him locally without shipping I would beg you for his sake to do it. I deal with rescues of greys, cockatoos and macaws most of which have permanent adjustment problems (manifested as feather plucking, mutilation, screaming, agression, fear of handling) that usually don't go away. Besides the atmospheric and temperature changes in the luggage hold of an airplane, and the jet fuel fumes alone are enough to seriously endanger a sensitive respiratory system. What breeders and shippers won't tell you is that they lose a high percentage of birds by shipping them long distances.

I'm sure you have a local Exotic Bird club there that could connect you with experienced bird keepers that would love to have him.
Thanks for your consideration.

Featherbaby,
Mother to 3 cockatoos, cockatiel, finches, etc. etc.
If it has feathers, I probably have it
