Shipping and Handling.....

I am trying hard to not be angry......

I ordered some birds from the Hatchery and they charge back for shipping etc.....they decided to send the birds by air.....problem is that when the birds flew overhead, the pilot circled and then proceeded back to Vancouver Airport.....So, the birds started out from Edmonton, flew to Vancouver and then overhead to Nanaimo, B.C. After 3 return flights begining at 7:51 pm, and ending at 10:00 am, the next morning it was decided to ship them to Victoria, B.C. and they would then arrive at 1:30 pm.....The boxes they were in were damp.....The drive from Nanaimo to Victoria Airport is 2 hrs. This cost me $100.00.....in Shipping and Handling Charges.....

When I got home, I unpacked and immediately put them into almost 100 degrees to heat them up.....and I should mention that I was almost cooked out of my car, and they chirped the entire 2 hrs. home....

So, from the time of pickup to this morning, We have lost 21 birds.....My concern now is that there could be other damage and I could loose more birds before the end of the growing period....because they were cold.....We started with 156 birds...

Does anyone have any suggestions, that I can challenge with the Hatchery.....? It's difficult enough with this genetic birds, that this just adds to the losses....

The hatchery will probably be willing to replace the lost birds or credit you for their value, it seems like most are. If you want more than that you're probably going to be out of luck. The hatchery has no control over the carrier, and the carrier was probably being rerouted due to weather conditions.

My advice is to accept the credit from the hatchery and wait till spring/summer to reorder. It doesn't sound like you're in a very good area to receive winter shipments of live birds.

Sorry for your troubles, call the hatchery to see if they will ship replacements for the lost ones.

Sorry, I'm not annoyed with the Hatchery, it's the policy of the Carrier with live cargo....

It seems senseless to me to go through the exercise of putting live animals on a plane when they know that there is a high percentage chance of doing a turn around....Then, waiting the length of time for formality, 3 returns, to allow an alternative route...

I realize that you can't expect everyone on staff at the Airlines to understand the problems that the cold can have on the birds, but what if it was someones domestic pet?

I really think that after this length of time, that better solutions in handling live cargo should be better handled.......

I did contact the Hatchery on Friday and they are waiting to hear from me on Monday....with the losses....They are a good Hatchery and have given lots of info to help, but, they need to know that this Carrier isn't the best....

I had a problem with my chicks a few years ago, probably from the same place. They were shipped out of Edmonton to Princeton, but the put on a different bus instead of the usual one and were shipped to Hope, so they had to wait for a bus to take them back to Princeton. They arrive a day late, but I was luck in the fact as soon as I got them from the feed store I gave them food and water, poor things were raviness. An other guy that got his at the same time as me was not so luck, all his died.

Sorry to hear this, my birds all arrived fine from Edmonton a couple weeks ago. That hatchery is great for replacemnets, but still it's th heartbreak that no one needs, and like you said you never know what the long term is in reduced growth or health when they have a bad start like that.

Still I have had great luck with winter chicks, in fact I'll always do layers this way now, if you get them in early Decmeber they arrive at laying age just as the days get long naturally, and they set into lay very healthy.

The chicks are doing well....We recently built a 14 X 14 area for the birds....We insulated the roof and walls. The floor is wooden and a good 2" thick.....We installed an electric wall heater, 1750 watts, as well as our heat lamps....they are very comphy....and do they motor about.....
