I am getting some day old chicks tomorrow. Should I give them shots for the merek and cocci when they get here? I have a mixture of chicks that have had the shots but my older hens didn't. Also have some chicks that hatched under a broody hen that didn't get the shots. How long do the shots last if I do give them the shots? I had never used any shots in the past so I'm not sure what is best for them. If i do give shots which one is the most important? Thanks ::rolleyes:

There is a shot for merek's but it comes in a large amount of doses. I have never heard of a vaccine for cocci. Medicated feed is the way to go if you are worried about it. It contains a small dosage of amprollium which is also used to treat cocci.

Thanks. I'm going without the shots. The chicks I bought from McMurtry was supposedly had been given both shots. Since then I have read to squeeze garlic pieces and put it in the water. That's for all grown and baby chicks. Ever heard of that?

I got 8 chicks last week and started then on day 1 with a water mixture of garlic clove, honey, and ACV. It is good for their immunity and gets them used to the taste from the beginning.

Can you tell me what ACV is. I e learned what I know from this site. I'm reading all the time.

Thanks Ron C I will give some in their water tomorrow. How much do I need to put in the water? Is the acv also good for the grown chickens?

I want to say about 1 tablespoon per gallon but I'm not sure. Yes you can give it to the adults also on a regular basis. Don't put it in a metal water container, it will react with the plating. And I wouldn't mix it with anything else.

Ron C. I've been really busy with grandchildren so I just got to read this. I had already put the acv, garlic and honey in the metal container. What will it do to them. I'm about to go out and empty it now but wanted to know what to look for. How often do I give this combination? The grown chickens are the only ones with a metal container.
