Should Chicken Coops In The South Be Made From Sheet Metal

I got rid of my sheet iron coops since the chickens seemed to bake in the summertime. Most mine are now made from fiberglass

Does that seem to work better for you? I would think metal coops anywhere would need special attention to ventilation, especially in the summer.

Sheet metal coops would need insulation and OSB interior walls or something in my opinion to make good reliable coops. Sheet metal buildings (like lowes sheds) would also need added windows and ventilation because they'd act like an oven in summer (ha I know I put up a shed from Lowes and it has 2 tiny vents in it - going in it is torture sauna event) and will get very cold in winter and if the birds put their feet or head (combs) against it can freeze to it! (seen it happen to a friend's chickens during an ice storm

) - and of course in summer touching that metal can burn their feet and combs as well. I just feel sheet metal is best as an exterior look as opposed to a suitable stand as it is structure.

How is your fiberglass coops holding up? Fiberglass as a complete structure will pull in and absorb head as well

but if yours is well ventilated it probably won't if it gets good airflow.
