I have a Salmon Favorelle rooster who will be a year old in April. Today he lowered his wing and shuffled sideways at me. He had done this a few times and I would pick him up,and carry him around for a while. Today when I was walking around holding him he threw back his head and let out a loud long crow. What does this mean? Is he being defiant and not the least bit afraid of me?

I don't have a ton of experience with roosters but I've had mine do this to me before. Both the wing shuffling AND the crowing in my arms. Neither of which has ever led my roosters (I have two) to be mean with me. One is flaky and hates being held but the other is a snuggler and he loves crowing while I'm holding him.. like he thinks he's a hot-shot being carried around the yard.

At least, that's MY case.. like I said, I don't have a lot of experience!

I would never let a rooster do the "chicken dance" at me...my first ones did, and I didn't know what it meant, and then suddenly they were spurring me.

Now I train them, as soon as they look like roosters, to avoid me. Just walk straight at him, waggle something in his face, until he backs up. If he ever dances at you, back him up. Train him to stay at least three feet away from you. Don't wait for him to attack you.

It's true that some roosters never become aggressive, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I won't risk having that happen again!

Col. Sanders my naked neck rooster use to do this to me. I had him penned up by himself, I thought he was trying to gig me, and my Gpa told me to put some hens in with him and once I gave him a few hens he quit chasing me and started chasing them and doing his deed. He is a big baby, and comes when I call him too!

Not unless he's bigger than you.

If his behavior escalates, convince him that you are the boss. You choose the means.

My friend has a couple of little sebright roosters that think they're pretty tough. They stand behind flowerpots and peek around the side at my DH and crow at him. One of the little guys came after DH's leg like he was really gonna damage him. I think that stupid chicken weighed about a pound. I think DH outweighs him by ... uh... more than that.
