We have around 120 chickens, a wide array of birds, some broilers some layers. A couple years ago we tried the chicken thing with about 30 chicks, it took the foxes about 6 months to go through all of them. This time they are staying inside till i get the fence built, my question is, is it worth the extra time and expense to "bury" the fence a foot below grade, to prevent any varmint from digging? We measured it out today, 900 foot of fence, sounds like alot but it will double as a goat pasture also. Any help is appreciated. I know it was fox last time around because i set a tree stand camera up and got several pictures of the lil bugger! Will they climb a 5' welded wire fence? Iam in central IL if that helps describe my topography. Thanks again for any suggestions

maybe about 8-10 inches. But, if you really want to keep them from digging, put an apron of hardware cloth around the edge this stops them from digging because it is layed on the ground.
