Should I buy chicks in the next few weeks, or wait until Spring?

We are so excited to buy 3 fluffy little chicks, but Spring is over and there aren't as many around. We found a good hatchery close to where we live and they have a waiting list of 1-2 weeks to several months for new chicks. Winters can get pretty cold around here (we live near Chicago). If we buy chicks in the late summer or early fall, will they be old enough to stand cold weather by wintertime? Or should we wait until next Spring?

I'm going to guess you're still 3 months away from snow? If so you should be ok.

I've received chicks in early Spring (its still winter in Western NY) and again in the summer and the latter is much better. You don't have to worry about them getting chilled as much as tiny chicks and shipping weather is easier on them. I had some shipped 4/l5 and I have some coming end of July so they will probably be big enough to go outside for a few weeks before they are all cooped for winter.

I don't think we'll be shipping them them, though. Would you still reccomend waiting til spring? (it seems such a long way off!)

You have plenty of time for them to feather out if you buy them now. It takes about 6 to 8 weeks for them to be fully feathered. Don't wait! You can always get some MORE chicks next spring!

Good Luck! And send pics!

And welcome to BYC!!!
