Should I change my feed?

Comparing bad to worse doesn't make bad any better.
So the biggest companies shouldn't be held to a standard because they dominate the market in your opinion?
I never said any such thing, and I have no idea how you could think I did based on what I actually stated

You said,"Recalls are going to happen to ALL products that are regulated, and it's only logical bigger companies will have more".

You reply to my post about low quality feeds with links I provided to recalls, and proceed to reply with the above statement, which only excuses the recalls because they are "bigger companies".

Hi,
Black Oil Sunflower Seeds are real good for the quality of feather. because of the oils in them.
Stop the scratch and start giving the girls a cup of BOSS a day sprinkled around the run. Do not feed
your girls fat producing corn during laying season. Feed protein instead. I don't know how
much corn is in your ration but do not feed pure corn scratch to the girls. Corn helps lay a
layer of fat under the skin. This causes the skin to be less elastic during a time when the
skin needs to starch to accommodate the expansion of the reproductive organs associated with
laying. if the organs don't have enough room to expand, it will effect their rate of lay, i.e. less eggs for you.
Best,
Karen

There are a number of ways to include animal protein into your chicks diets:

- Find a feed that includes it, like Purina's Game Bird feed line
- Add in some cooked ground beef or raw trimmings from your local butcher shop if you can get them to give you some
- Add in a small amount of high quality, non-poultry based cat food, such as Evo Herring and Salmon dry cat food: http://www.evopet.com/products/1431, which is about 50% protein
- Add in some catfish feed pellets, which are generally about 35% protein.
- Add some 30% Turkey starter mixed into your regular ration.

Those things sounds simple enough. I just wanna go about doing this the best way for my ladies. I hate to see them like this.

I haven't fed them scratch yet. I just said that I would consider tossing them some out, to give them something to do. My next day off I'm going to raid the barn and the basement for some random items to give them to climb on. If all else fails I'm going to go to Lowes and buy some stuff. I've been meaning to for a while now, but I figure if I'm going to do it.. better do it before the weather starts getting all nasty and cold.

My girls do not like the BOSS.
I have tried mixing it in with treats, shelling it in front of them and tossing it to them with some pieces with the shells still on. Nada. Some do pick at the pieces that are shelled. But, not much.

Most feeds are the same, all plant protein & the cheapest stuff at the moment. I liked using Purina Game bird feed until they quit using animal protein I my area. It is super difficult to get animal protein & many use just animal by products or hydrolyzed feathers, which I won't feed. I find it easier to supplement with my own meat or salmon non grain dog food. Everyone loves porcine meal, but with the drugs they have been putting in pork & beef lately, I will only feed my grass fed local pork or beef scraps. No Zilmax or Racopene or whatever for my chickens.
