Ringnecks are a nice bird to have, however they have a habit of bashing their heads against the tops of their aviaries, so be mindful of that. They are very nervous. If you are new to pheasants I suggest you start with goldens.

Danged ole birds need a nice run, pen, or what thos fancy folks on that gbwf site call an aviairarie. To answer yur question I say yes, yes you should get some them ole ringnecks. I migt start with bout a quad or trio. make yurself a nice pen bout ten by twenty or twenty five bout seven or eight foot tall. get some that fabric netting matereal fur them little noggens or clipp them flight fethers. you know them primaries. get urself som shelters in there nuff to block teh wind n rain lik a lean to or whatever is availble. and for that other questin them birds make a nice deppresn in the dirt an don need no nest box. might like som hay straw in them shelters. ya know they will probly jus poop em where they please. If it wer me Id start small an that next year if you like em go from ther. If not then heck aint nothn wrong with tryn.

Personally I find very little sense of utilitarian use keeping pheasants.

There are much better choices for meat or egg birds. I kept ringnecks for a while, they require large enclosures, males are agressive like game roosters, seasonal layers of small eggs (bantam size) I was not impressed with their meat, prefere Guineas Hens for meat (much easier and cheaper to raise) or Chuckar, Bobwhite Quail or Coturnix meat much less space required and Chukar or Bob's meat is superior to ringneck.

Personal opinion of course.

Any other aspect ringnecks may or may not suit ones needs.

I agree with the idea of starting with Goldens. Much less agressive, and can be kept in smaller pens. I use 10 x 10 x 6' high dog kennels with wire tops. These work well for my Red Goldens, Silvewrs and Lady Amherst. I had a pair of ERingnecks a friend gave me and 10 x 10 was too small and he was too agressive. Killed his hen in short order even tho she had plentyu of protection. Kerry

Yes, I think Goldens and Amhersts are a good choice for a beginner. They are what I started out with and I had no trouble keeping and breeding them.

They lay from late march to september. They are not really hard, but aren't easy. They are hard as juveniles though.
