SHOULD I HELP MY DUCKLING HATCH? HELP ME!!!

Hi all-

My newest duckling made an external pip on day 28. On day 29 i helped it by adding some warm water to the shell so it wouldnt dry out...It has made no real progress since then, and now on day 30, it is cheeping really loudly but ha not rotated in the egg , so i took the top of the shell off to expose it and there is membrane all around the chick. The membrane is white, but when i add a drop of warm water it turns translucent. I can see the duckling and one BIG vein/vessel thingy on the duckling. It is day 30 and it looks like it still hasent absorbed the yolk and blood(or at least the blood). It is bleeding a tiny bit but not gushing but i am scared that if i do anything else it will bleed to death! HELP!

if you can see down the egg and see that the yolk is absorbed then helping is fine

open the shell enough for him to push out on his own

from what you can see does it look like there is a risk of it bleeding to death? I just don't want to break any veins...

He should be able to get out on it's own now, watch and wait, if you see it hasn't absorbed the yolk it's not ready.

It is out- the yolk appears to be absorbed but there is one vein connecting from the inside of the shell to the ducks "bellybutton". The is a good amount of blood in the egg but the duckling is squirming and chirping like crazy. the shell is still "attached" to the duck.

It will dry and fall off which by now it may have already.. please let us know. what ever you do don't mess with it,.

Congratulations!!!

Totally agree with Miss Lydia; leave it be and let nature do what it does best from this point on. You did an amazing job of keeping the membrane moist so your duckling could thrive. Having done that myself, I can totally relate to the experience.

I think the only thing I did differently was to keep the amount of shell I removed to the minimum and so I could moisten the membrane; the more shell is on, the less exposed the duckling and the less chance of bacteria getting in. But you did well!

hi all-

Sorry to announce that the duckling died last night. I think it was messed up up to begin with, it was in the shell for 30 days, 2 days with no progress, maybe it just wasn't meant to live.
Very sad.

Thanks for all of your help you guys!, even though it didn't make it, there is another one hatching in 3 days....! and im hatching quail too!
