Should I keep feed in my coop at all times?

So I'm new to having chickens, one week new to be exact. So far we have been keeping their feed full and in the coop with them at all times. During the day they are allowed to roam freely in the yard and eat the grass, bugs, and grit. However they willingly spend most of their day inside the coop and seem to constantly eat the feed taking occasional breaks to walk outside for 10 min or so. They also look to be gaining weight quickly and they are pooping constantly making a big mess! We have to clean out their coop almost every two days. Is all of this normal? Should I only feed them once or twice a day? Their are only three hens so the worry of one not getting enough food is not there. Also, what other suggestions do you have of other foods that would be good for them to eat other than just feed? I've heard that garlic and olive oil is good for them.

Thanks in advance for the responses! =)

That sounds normal to me. They should be fed free choice. They eat as they need it. If you are feeding mash it helps to let the feeder go empty for a short period each day to encourage them to eat the fines and the minerals that may settle to the bottom and not just eat the large particles.

They are very good at regulating their consumption to what they need and don't overeat.
