i have a chick that hatched about 3 days ago. it couldnt stand from the begining. i thought maybe straddle legged so i was given a link and saw the bandaid hobble trick but that didnt work. i pu cardboard on his feet, that didnt work. i tried the chick chair and that didnt work either. he doesnt want to eat, but is very lively and seems strong, hes not easy to hold and manuver as if he was weak or anything. i have tried him on different surfaces its not the problem, i will put him down and steady him, and he will just fall to the side and not be able to get up.i dont know what is going on but i hate hearing him chirp loud and be in distress, not eating and cant scratch himself. its awful, i dont know what else to do besides have dh put him down.. anything i can try before doing that?

I'm sorry you're having this problem, but I hope you'll give him a little longer. If he's still alive and kicking, and making the effort to survive, don't give up hope quite yet. Have you tried giving him Polyvisol? (without iron) If it's a nutritional problem, that should help clear the problem up. I know you probably have done this all ready, but I just wanted to remind you that keeping him separated at this time is probably a good idea.

On another note, were the chicks vaccinated for Mereks? I don't think the symptoms exactly match, but if it's neurological it's best not to rule it out completely yet.

What breed of chick is he? Sometimes silkies get a condition called "wry neck" which can really disrupt their balance.

I'm sorry I'm not more help. Here's a bump at any rate. Best of luck for your little guy

thanks a ton, i would like to give him longer too but the constant peeping is making my stomache wrench. i will get some poly vi sol tomorrow. hes not eating tho, i dont want him to starve to death that would be awful. he hatched here, i do not vaccinate. i hatched over 30 and all others were fine. he is seperate too. i wish he was trying to eat id feel much better..

well try putting his beak in the food or holding him up, or he might just not be interested while you're there.

definatly keep trying

i cant leave food in with him because he knocks it over, theres no way for me to set him up really, i have tried. i offer it to him often but he doesnt want it, and he goes crazy if i try to force feed. he only drinks because i kind of make him. its getting hard to watch this poor thing unable to get himself upright.. i wish i could help and fix him. im not going to be able to get out to the store until this afternoon to get the poly vi sol.

My silkie baby was down for a few days, could barely sit upright at times, I force fed him with a syringe and gave him water with karo syrup mixed in and got him polyvisol vitamins and within one day of the vitamins he was standing and is now able to walk with no prob. He at one point was laying on his side and I was Sure he was going to die, so you never know, if he is strong give him a chance and def get the vitamins in him.....Hope he does well

I had a chicken that had a deformed foot and could barely stand we kept him and now he is fine other then a funky looking foot and a bad nickname "Gimpy" she is one great chicken now.. give it time.

i wouldnt mind having a gimpy chicken, its just the fact he wont eat i hate for him to starve to death, i feel thats worse than putting him down. ill see how today goes once i can get the vitamins

You can try making the food tastier to tempt him. Mix it with water, oatmeal, yogurt, scrambled eggs, and honey, and give it to him warm. He's probably crying more because he's lonely than because he's sick. If you put him where he can at least see the other chicks, that might help.

Give it much more time..most important keep hydrated. Keep dipping beak in water that has sugar and vitamins in it..wipe beak with yogurt, or when he peeps use the syringe and drip the water and yogurt

I have had many like exactly how u describe. And they all pulled thru

If they don't stay hydrated, this is what could cause them not to eat
Xoxo
