We are leaving tomorrow(Wednesday) early before my girls will lay there eggs for the day. We won't be home until late thrusday night.

Should I throw away those eggs?

We are new to egg laying. Three of our girls have been at it for about 2 1/2 weeks. This is the first time we are leaving overnight.

They will be fine, especially if you don't have a full time broody sitting on them...

Check their temp when you get home if they are cool to the touch no one has sat on them and they are good to go... If they are warm someone was sitting on them and they might have started to develop, but only if fertile and even then the 1st day or so won't make them unusable...

Thanks!

Tomorrow high is 90 then 85 Tuesday.

No ones been even the slightest bit interested in sitting on them. They do there business and then are right back out of the coop.

We have 2 roosters but they are both bantams. They are alittle over three months old. They are to small. To mate with the bigger girls. That would really be a site to see if it were happening. They aren't much bigger then a morning dove bird if you are familiar with those. LoL

So how long do we have to be gone before we do have to throw them away?

Oh, do not let the little roosters sizes fool you! They can and will fertilize the big girls just as happily they will ones their own size! :D

A couple days is about all I'd do, just to be on the safe side... if the eggs get poop smears the bacteria could cause the egg to go bad before you get back if more than a couple/few days... unwashed, unrefridgerated eggs can stay good up to a month sitting on a counter... and 6 months if in the fridge...

If you plan on being gone for more than a couple days, it'd be best to have someone check on your chickens and pick up eggs for you though... :)

Eggs with the 'bloom' aka unwashed and never refrigerated can be left at room temp for about 2 weeks and still be 'fresh' longer and still be edible, since you are in the high 80s and 90s I would probably limit that down though to 4 or 5 days, but that is just being safe they should be fine longer...

Thanks for all this great info. We have been keeping our eggs in an egg basket on the counter. I think I may have to start dating the eggs because they just get all mixed up in the basket. Is that okay to do with a pencil?

I was just worried that it may be to hot to have them sitting outside so long! Since room temp in the house is only 75.

Very welcome...

You can use anything you're comfortable with to date them... or use cartons and put the freshest in the bottom ones, back rows...

Heat should only be an issue in excess of 100 and for 3 or more days... :)
