We plan on keeping two roosters one is a silver duckwing bantam, one is a barred cochin bantam. They right now live with the rest of the flock mostly full size hens and a few other bantams. Should we build them their own cock house so they are separate from the girls? Ive read mixed opinions on this. If they were full sized roosters a yes to that but they are both bantams...how much hell can they raise?

im just going by my own flock. but silver duckwings are bred from game lines. I had a 2 lb silver duckwing oe get loose and try to take on a 9 lb buckeye roo. the cochin on the other hand is usually a very docile breed. chances are if you don't separate them sooner or later you will lose the cochin.

Are OE bantam roosters just mean? I really want to kind of illusion myself into thinking we could keep both...I mean both ae going on 9 weeks now and super laid back. The OE guy hardly ever even makes a sound. The cochin just sticks with his wife (the female cochin) and doesn't bother anybody else... There is a 9 week old barred rock rooster who creates issues but he hopefully is moving to his new home this week. Although he is still sweet and eats from my hand!
Maybe I live in a fantasy land where I can keep all the birds and live happily ever after

mean maybe isn't the right word, but as they get older they do get territorial. 2 old English game bantams will kill each other, and I know they will attack other birds. being raised together might help, but you will probably need to separate them at about 5 months old.

Thank you for the help. I think though Im going to go cry! LOL I wanna keep all the babies! Maybe I should start looking for a banty fam needing a new rooster soon though...

Sorry to jump in but was reading this thread and I have a question. I am very new to raising chickens. I have 8 chicks from TSC. I asked for females but based on the other posts, I am not confident that I have that. If a couple of them are roosters can I not raise them all? I have 4 RIR and 4 Barred Rock.
Thanks

this is a 3 foot x 3 foot temporary pen I built to separate new birds when they arrive. the back and sides are covered with poultry netting, the front I used 1x2 16 gauge wire and made a door to fit, you could also put on a hinged door. if you had to buy the wood and metal roof new, you would have about $30 in this. in the winter time I cover them with plastic on the back and sides, leave the front open and facing away from the wind. that is 4 silver duckwing oe bantams in it now.

rhode island reds and barred rocks are from non game lines. they will usually co exist if there is plenty of room for them to run. raising them together does help. but when breeding time comes they will fight for dominance. game lines fight to the death, most heritage breeds wont kill each other, unless the fight is left to go on for days.

on another note, if you decide to hatch chicks, you can put your barred rock hens under your rhode island red rooster (if he is true rhode island red) and get a sex linked chick. the ones that have a white dot on their head are males.
