I find it very useful to have a way to temporarily contain birds.

This is a method I use for holding birds I'm getting ready to send to freezer camp, birds I'm weighing and assessing for breeders so I can tag them, and for other reasons.

First thing I use is these round cages made of 1"x2" welded wire. The nice thing about using the wire is you can put water in rabbit bottles for the birds you are holding.

He wire is just wrapped back around on itself.

We then stake down the wire on either side. If we have a particularly rambunctious rooster, we stake it down in four places.

If you have a row of the cages, you can stake two of them with one post.

After that, we pull some 4ft wide snow fencing over top of the cages, putting tension on the snow fencing with the posts holding the cages down.

And then, you add birds. You also can put a tarp over the birds to keep out rain and give them shade if there is sun.

I set up a row of 4 cages today so I can hold 7 birds that I am supposed to sell this afternoon. I used the reflector sticks to hold the snow fence down over the top. Some of the chickens were trying to fly out. I put a tarp over them after this picture was taken.

This has gone through a few incarnations, but in the end I have an extra large dog crate (folds flat when not in use). I took out the plastic floor panel and zip tied it to the top to make a roof. I added a kitty litter pan of water for the ducks and a smaller plastic tote stuffed with straw with an entrance hole cut in one side as a house.

It's next to the regular duck house/coop and I have blocked it in with a long pallet for protection from the wind/sun/etc.

I made two of these a few years ago. Super handy to have. So far they have been transport cages to a swap meet, transport to have birds processed, hospital crate, brooder, and time out for naughty birds.

They measure 2x4x2'. It is 1/4" hardware cloth and has a 1 /4" plywood bottom.
I need to make one of these for holding birds for processing. The one problem I have with my wire cages is that the roosters always end up with crops full of grass.

Having a bottom and small wire sides would help with that.

It is a pain to store as it is big.

Next time I would make it so the thing goes together with bolts and wing nuts so when not needed it can be stored flat.

I may make one just to get it figured out.......

Oh and the split lid is wonderful! Open just one side and no one escapes.

Yeah that is nice, they go to the side you aren't on and you reach over and nab them. I had one of my Delaware girls escape this morning. I caught her and put her in the plastic tote I was using to move them closer to the house. When I caught the next one, she flew up and jumped out through the crack. I caught her again though. I LOVE my chicken hook. When I went to move them into the wire cages I had set up, I threw a tarp over the tote so when I lifted the lid and reached for a chicken, they couldn't see the lid was open.

Mine is very similar.

I have space inside my chicken coop right now so it doesn't have to be predator proof.

There is hardware mesh on all the sides, top and bottom. I have put a medium pet carrier for a wind break and food and water dishes.

Right now I have 6 chicks that are being integrated with the flock.
