Hi,

I just got back from our county fair and had a question about showing chickens. All the ones I would have wanted to show are molting now--how do you delay it or make it happens sooner, or do you just not show them? Also, they tend to look all ratty before they molt, is this acceptable in a hen (as opposed to a pullet)?

Thanks!

Most judges take it into consideration. Most birds molt this time of year.
I usually just show my younger birds and keep the molting hens at home LOL. I have asked the same question and they say they just take off some points for condition. Depends on if she is just starting or lost all her feathers?Does she look really ratty? My one Buff Orpington hen looks like a mess right now and there is no way I would take her to a show. I have some at the Puyallup Fair right now and they are all under a year old.
