I am feeling your pain!
We joined a 4H that is in it's first year and is having a show. So coming from NO experience showing my recommendation:
If you have a bird you feel is worthy of showing:
Pick the show you intend on entering and find out well in advance what testing is required. You'll probably have to get someone to draw blood and this can be expensive, so prepare yourself. Plan your blood draw on a date that will cover the most shows, for instance the bloodwork for most shows in PA has to be done within 3 months of the show. We have a show in mid October and another in early January, so I will get my birds tested immediately before the October show so that the paperwork is good for both shows.
Work with the bird being shown, get them used to a cage. Practice until the bird is comfortable coming in and out of the cage.
Your birds should be washed before the show.
Yeah, that's all I got for now. I think you'll find the people at the show helpful and sweet (they are chicken people, right?) so Have FUN!
