shredded paper in nesting boxes

I do. The hens once in a long while would eat a few pieces which have no effect on them. After the paper gets used and dirty, I throw it in the compost. Works great so far for me. I recycle and compost the same time, and not have to spend money on hay.

I do not care what you use for bedding or nest material a chicken will try to eat it even carpet!

After they have eaten it the next thing is to poop on it regardless if it was good or not!

Speaking of my birds anyway some may have chickens with more decorum.

I just finished a coop and I'm using shredded paper for the nesting box.

After a weekend of use, I found that it is easily blown everywhere so make sure you have a decent sized lip to the opening of the nesting box to try and keep the paper from flying out. The chickens seem to not mind it - they do peck at it sometimes but I have not observed them eating it yet but that may be because the shreds are kind wide-ish.
