Sick adult Turkey. Can anyone help diagnosis?

How is she feeling today? If someone doesn’t post and I would re-post w poo sample if any, “might need a little help.” I was encouraged just to give clean everything and give my bird a few days. But mine had a fever, acted like she had a migraine headache w head in dark corner for days (not eating a full week). She was very ill and long distance DVM said salmonella and I thought w coli more probale. I medicated, because both I and DVMs, plus an awesome person in this group suggested what I get at TSC (Duravet). I already had Baytril my local DVM gave me before he went on vacation. She had been roughed up a puppy, although she didn’t appear wounded too much, but might have been internal injuries. She was down at least two weeks before she turned around.

I’m praying for your bird.
Do you know of any places to get stuff over the counter for them?

I think it might be Mycoplasma based on my other turkey having foam in their eyes. I am trying to get Tylosin Tartrate but I can not get it without a vet and the vets will not see the turkey 😞

You can buy Duramycin at Tractor Supply. Dosage instructions are on the packaging. I haven’t found a DVM in my area that does anything, but fecals. And he left town shortly after my bird started going downhill.

And my bird’s poo was super clear, gelatinous clear w bright green goop. No sign of parasites. Originally I thought it might be the spring grass, but she got super sick.

A lot of people might not believe in poo, but when you take care of million dollar horses, I watched and counted daily. It’s a good indication what’s going on.

There is a Hillcrest Meadow Equine in PA might do a TeleMed check. She was raised w exotic avians and stays current. I had an emergency during July last year and a broodmare manager in Ocala hooked me ip w them. She’s been a GodSend to me personally and not charged me. But even she is guessing. She said something about having luck w fecal transplant,” and I’m in NC mtns w no avian DVMs within a three hour drive. That would be out of the question for me.

Everything, I either had, or could get at Tractor Supply or equivalent retailer.

But I do believe in the yogurt by syringe. It did “give me comfort,” when she wasn’t eating and got some good gut motility going. And I did it 2X a day. She still didn’t eat, because like humans, when they have a fever like she did, they don’t have an appetite. But, it really helped her. I didn’t force feed her, but gave her a chance to shallow after I shot it in her mouth.

And, I know several good things. My Doxycycline will work if I don’t have anything else on hand, bc I have it for superficial wounds as a flush or in her yogurt. Amoxicillin Penicillin is at TSC OTC, but I haven’t used it. I also use acidophilus in her food now, because I thought if she had salmonella it had to come from a bad batch of game bird feed. The Southern States rep assured me it didn’t and said a lot of domestic birds are getting sick from wild birds.

If nobody on here answers pretty quick, instructions are on the Internet for dosing birds different antibiotics.

And a turkey’s temp should be 105. My DVM laughed at me, because I freaked out thinking it should be the same as a horse at 101 range for normal and stopped at 104 bc it stressed my bird out.

P.S. One person on here got all over me saying they didn’t believe my bird was sick, but I take care of farms professionally. Only turkey / birds were new. I’m not an alarmist. But I did take what they said in stride, “don’t medicate unless absolutely necessary.” Praying your turkey feels better sooner than later

Rookie on birds, but trying to give you some reassurance that “You Can Be Your Own DVM Sometimes.” Old horse reference book. Most DVMs don’t treat birds and w CoVid protocol figured my bird would totally loose it over transport and being possibly blindfolded w lots of barking dogs, since she’s been attacked before.

These folks are great on here. Re-post w photo showing yucky poo for attention and then one farther off on her demeanor. There are a lot of posts on sick birds right now. And caption what you think it is.

I looked it up and while Tylosin was recommended, the Duramycin might be helpful and you can buy without an Rx at Tractor Supply (where I found mine) if you can’t get a DVM. It won’t cure it, but it should help since it is a tetracycline. Penicillin would not be the correct antibiotic.

This posted 2X, but I doubled checked what I got without an Rx over the counter at Tractor Supply and it’s Duramycin. You could start it tomorrow without a Rx. Dosage on the package. This was recommended to me by a DVM. I couldn’t specifically get the Oxytet she was talking about, but this is close

@Warrior Creek Thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough reply. I was able to get a hold of tylosin and plan on distributing it as a soluble powder to my flock. I found a vet that could write a prescription for a turkey! I also found Good RX (kinda of like vics vapor rub for turkeys) and applied it to the sick hen so hopefully help her respiratory. system. I will keep you posted on progress!

For people that may stumble across this sub I am using 1 tsp of soluable tylan per gallon for 3 days. Just make sure you do not eat the eggs for a few days while using.

Thanks again Warrior Creek!

Are you eating the turkey eggs? I thought they looked a little gross, but Mary quit laying after she got sick. Does your girl have a name? And great you finally found a DVM. So frustrating when all you are trying to do is be a great owner to your feathered friend and only a few ppl will see turkeys, except for trimming claws and beaks. I pray she’ll be on the mend in no time and “hopefully it’s not as serious as you think and she’s better asap.”
