I bough 8 Rouen ducklings and 5 Toulouse Goslings 12 days ago and have some troubles with them. To start we had 1 gosling from day one, that was acting weird kinda swaying its head back and forth biting at the air, I was thinking it had something caught in its throat, I tried many things to help that gosling but it wasn't eating at all, it was drinking but it still would shake its head after it drank. That one ended up dying like 5 days after I got them.
Couple of days ago the smallest duckling started walking around on its hocks it wouldn't hardly straighten its legs when standing it kinda crawled around. Today its doing better able to stand up and walk around normal although it still does a lot of walking on its hocks.
Then yesterday morning my biggest (who was doing great) gosling started acting a little weak it would just lay around and when it was sitting down or standing up it would roll back on to its hocks then stand up or sit. It was eating and drinking just not much, but I noticed its poop was really small and just a little squirt of liquid. I woke up this morning it was dead it didn't even make it through the night.
And now I'm noticing another gosling that's acting weak just starting to use its hocks to get up and down as well as another duck starting to use its hocks to get up and down.

I started out with them in one of those kiddy swimming pools for the first couple of days there bedding was sand covered with newspaper and then topped off with paper towels and then removed the paper after day 3 and a and on day 7 moved them into and 8ft by 3ft box and have oak sawdust about 3 inches of it and topped that off with a 2 inches of sand so the saw dust was buried and just used to help absorb the moisture. I clean it often and put down more sand, I keep there waters clean and plenty of water I give them Nutrena NatureWise

So my question is whats going on with my goslings and ducks?

Right now I have had them outside in a little pen.

Thx

questions?... how old are they? are they outside grazing at all? what are you feeding them? You need Chick starter NON-MEDICATED!! and some extra Niacin or Brewers yeast. Did you hatch them or buy them? Have you called the provider? Do you have a heat lamp on them? they must be kept warm, like 85 degrees. & this is all for geese, I don't know about ducks... jennifer

Thanks Jennifer, I'm gonna give the hatchery a call, they are 12 days old, today is the first day outside so they are eating some grass, The feed is non-medicated, I bought them from a hatchery, I have a brooder light and the temp is good. Ducks pretty much fall into the same category as geese.

I give them Nutrena NatureWise

Meatbird crumble Feed.

I wonder if the meatbird feed is too high in protein for them?

Skyesrocket I was thinking that it might be that, Nutrena NatureWise

Meatbird crumble Feed says 0-finish for geese and Ducks, When I was at the feed mill yesterday I picked up some Duck and Geese Grower which is 18%protein and Nutrena is 21%. I'm going to change over to the Duck and Geese Grower, hopefully that will help.
Thanks for the input Skyesrocket

I really don't think its the protein level because its recommended that goslings up to 3 weeks get around 20 percent protein. One thing I would worry about is the sand for goslings. Goslings will eat anything and sand acts as grit. Problem is if they consume too much it can cause a problem. They are completely different in ducks in that respect as you have to watch what bedding you but them on. They will even consume large pieces of the wood shavings at a very early age and can cause a blockage problem. I have no idea if that is the problem but the sand came to mind as a potential problem for them.
