I have 6 baby chicks about 1 week old. 1 hatched from purchased/shipped eggs under my broody hen (other 3 never developed). I bought 5 more baby chicks to raise with the singlet. I have 6 total but one is not well. She arrived in the mail a little weaker than the rest. But seemed to perk up easily. They have been here for 6 days. Yesterday, one of them was clearly more sleepy than the others. She just wants to cuddle under the hen and rest while everyone else is jumping and racing about. The hen is ready to take the babies out, I think but this one is not ready and will not be able to keep up. I gave her vitamin B and Growgel and Nutridrench... whatever she seems to sip at. She isn't terribly interested in anything though occasionally pecks a little for food. I put her in separate brooder where she took a 10 minute nap and then woke up chirping loudly for her family. I put her back with them but keep checking her. She is happy to be under the hen when the hen is willing to be still.

She has pooped several times and seems normal or maybe runny. But just now pooped runny bloody poop. Hmmm... could this be coccidosis? She is vaccinated for Marek. Could she have internal injury? Mom Hen scratches to teach the babies but sometimes a baby gets underfoot and tossed. They typically pop up and come running back for more lessons.

I am not sure if B vitamin is a bad idea. If coccidosis, isn't that what it requires? I thought amprolamine made for B deficiency? I had previous chick bounce back from medicated chick starter when I added vitamin B after she started losing her balance.

Probably doesn't matter but she is a Swedish Flower Hen.

Thoughts?

What with the bloody poop, I would treat quickly, like now, with Corid. The powder dose is 1 1/2 tsp per gallon of water. Make a new batch daily for 5-7 days. Don't give vitamins while treating. Id treat them all by making this their only water source to drink. It will not hurt the others even if they don't have Cocci. Immediately, give the sick baby a direct does. Take 1/2 teaspoon Corid powder mix with 9 ml water. Stir/shake well and give 0.07 ml per 100 grams of body weight (0.34ml per pound) orally. So probably about close to 3/4 of a tsp. give it 2x a day by dripping it into the side of her beak.

Thank You! Ok... I don't have corid so will run to Tractor Supply ASAP.

Does is sound like coccidosis? Could it be something else?

Should I switch to Medicated Chick Feed, too? Or is that too much to pump them with.

It sounds like cocci, yes. It could be something else, but I doubt it. And on the chance it is cocci, if you don't treat quick, they start dying, so its better safe than sorry. By the time these symptoms show it is sometimes too late. I wouldn't worry about med feed. Med feed doesn't treat Cocci, not enough amp in it for that.

Oh no!!! I csnt get Corid! Now what? Tractor Supply sold out and everywhere else i have called doesnt carry it. Something else to fo? Feed medicated? Though she isn't very hungry.

I'm sorry.Can you find this:

IMG_1648.JPG Ok... went to another town and found Corid 20%soluble powder for bovine. Hope it is the right stuff. Should be home in an hour to dose her.
