Over the weekend I had 70 quail hatch out. At first it seemed they were all doing well. Over the next day several of them would lay on there back or there side with their legs straight out in front of them and kick. This would last for several. Hours until they died. I lost over 20 of my chicks. Can anyone help.
Sounds like they might be over heating. What is the temp of your brooder? Should be 95 degrees the first week, lowered by 5 degrees each week till 6 weeks old.
Make sure the babies are not crowded in and the brooder is large enough that you can keep the heat off to one side and the feed and water off to the other so they have to get out of the heat to get the goods. There needs to be a cool side to the brooder. Do not cover the lid of the brooder with anything but a screen or wire for good heat and oxygen exchange.
Make sure to lay down paper towels and sprinkle feed on the floor all around the feeder so they can find the feed. Crush it up for the first week so they can eat it.
I have the temp right now and they are doing much better. I have 150 more going to hatch this weekend. Hoping for a lot better this time.
Thank you again
