Hi again,
I posted on a similar issue earlier (Re: Safeguard in Water?), but this is more urgent and directed now.
I had a flock of five, which is now four. Three full sized: one Barred Rock, two Americanas, and two Bantam Cochins: one Buff and one White. I got them all in March as pullets, the full size are now around 11-12 months, the Bantams 8-10 months. They all have access to clean water (usually treated with ACV, but not while on medication) and layer pellets. The can range in my yard, mostly wood chips under a black walnut tree. Sebastopol, CA.
About three weeks ago our Barred Rock began acting listless, and died in less than a week. We noticed she was hiding and isolating herself, not eating/drinking much, scratching very little/not at all. We isolated her began treating with Safeguard Goat Dewormer when I noticed what appeared to be a roundworm in her droppings. Soon she had faded color in the face, comb faded and floppy, tail down and eyes closed a lot. Finally, she began panting heavily and sitting most of the time. She would eat a little scratch/food and drink water in her isolation. She died on the 23rd of July, before we could administer the 4th dose of dewormer, out of an intended 5.
I proceeded to deworm the rest of the girls beginning on the 3rd of August, even though I was checking everyone's droppings regularly and everything looked healthy to 'Oily/Foamy'. One Americana (Otherwise acting 100% healthy) had stopped laying, two days before the dewormer. She has continued to act fine, but is not laying. My White Bantam began to lay just after my barred rock passed, and is still laying. The Buff Bantam may or may have laid an egg on the first day of the dewormer, as she has not laid an egg since, and I could have just not noticed my white bantam's egg hiding in the straw from the day before.
After two doses of the medication, I noticed that my Buff Cochin (bottom of the pecking order) began acting similar to my Barred Rock. She is isolating herself, has reduced appetite and listless activity. Lot of time with her eyes closed, and tail down. Hunched posture and poor feather quality. She's been acting this way and seems to be slowly deteriorating since Wednesday the 5th. I was hoping the wormer would help turn her around, but she is not improving. I've checked her vent, felt for a bound egg, and felt her crop, and she just feels very skinny.
I'm planning to follow up with another 5-day treatment of the Safeguard to break the roundworm cycle after 10 days, but the Buff is not looking well today. I'm concerned that if she gets any worse she won't live until the next treatment. I'm wondering what I can do? Maybe I've been treating for the wrong thing? She is now isolated inside the house, eating and drinking.
