I have a (along with 5 other) Araucana chick that is almost 5 weeks old. she has always seemed to be the alpha in the flock (we also have 6 RIR and a RIR Roo). Today we changed out the bedding in the coop, swept up the wood chips and added new. Tonight she is panting and very passive (will let us hold her with out upset) and we are worried. The new bedding we put down has some pine needles in it, we weren't sure if they'd be a problem but maybe they are. They are died not fresh . . .not sure if maybe she ate something that upset her or tried to digest something she shouldn't. We have also collected some grasshopers and maybe she got ahold of one of those.

Any suggestions or advice would be well welcomed!!

Thanks

How hot is it there? And you say "tonight".... if it is roosting time or near to it, they will be in a trancelike state. You could send them on a ferris wheel and they would just zone out.

Yes. She is doing much better, we think she jsut can't take the heat. We brought her in the house, made her drink and eat a little. She stopped panting but still breaths awfully heavy. The best thing is that she didn't die! She is my 2 1/2 year old chicken named fondly . . .Turkey! She was the most dominant in the bunch but with her set back, she isn't quite queen of the coop anymore. We are constantly watching her.
