Yestarday a friend told me she had this ailing chick so I went out to pick her up. She was about half the size of the other chicks her age, she wasn't eating or drinking very much. I brought her home and she is in a separate brooder from my other babies (just in case she has something contagious). She will drink when I dip her beak in the water, and will eat if I hand feed her. She is very skinny and frail. She has something wrong with one of her eyes, maybe it is glued shut/pecked out/just never had one. It is very swollen. Last night I put some neosporin on the eye and this morning it is looking better, but she still can't see out of it.

I am calling her seagull. She is probably a mixed breed (maybe a silkie mix?) I have no idea how old she is, maybe around a month? I was also wondering if it is safe to put her with the other chicks, what is she is contagious? Any advice on what I can do to help her would be greatly appreciated!

thanks for the advice! I tried the egg thing and she was eating them like there was tomorow! I still have to hand feed her, but she ate a lot! Thanks!

She could have gotten pecked and had her eye scratched, something minor like that. Or she could have some respiratory type of sickness. Keep her isolated away from your other chicks, incase this is something that can spread. The last thing you want is a brooder full of sick chicks.

all i know is that one should never put neosporin near the eyes. it says so on the tube. i put it near my eye (on the skin underneath) recently, and even that hurt like he**, just from the fumes.

good luck with her, i hope your baby pulls through!

oh dear, ok I will go get that off her face right away!!! Thanks for the heads-up!!!

Hi. Update on this chick. I took her to the vet. The vet diagosed a bacterial infection, probably a sinus infection. The chick had a milky discharge coming from the eye and nose. She is now on oral antibiotics (Baytril) and eye antibiotics (Falcon brand...gentamicin). The eye antibiotics are exactly the same kind my husband had prescribed for his eye.

It has been about a week, little Seagull is doing well, eating, etc. We did get her a feather duster "friend" and she really liked that.

Thanks everyone.
