Hello, and thank you for this forum. We are relatively new to raising chickens and now have a sick Polish Frizzle. The link is to a YouTube video I have posted of her. The video is about a minute seven seconds long, and shows her with what appears to be a cough, repeated opening of her beak, and toward the end of the video, her efforts to walk. She began to display symptoms a few days ago. None of the other 12 chickens have displayed any symptoms. We have her on terramycin, and have separated her from the others. I have been checking the books, but many of the symptoms in the books are overlapping and don't precisely describe what we are seeing. We managed to nurse a silkie back to health, but this one does not appear to have any nasal discharge, and her lungs sounds clear. We thought maybe crop blockage as she sounds like she is trying to clear her throat, but that doesn't make sense with the walk. She seems to eat OK. Any ideas? We figure if it was something really serious, she'd be dead by now, so we are hoping to save her. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can be.

I'm very new to this, but maybe the head shake could be gapeworm perhaps. There are alot of threads on it. Hopefully not, but even if it's not, you'll be able to cross that off the list. Good luck...

She is a beauty!!

you can try worming for gape worms as it will take a vets perscription for Droncit
or one other wormer

you can call Firtst state vet and Dr Peter Brown can help you

with that said

my thoughts after raising featherlegged frizzles cochin type as this one is

it is a form of early stages of mareks

now with that said the mareks will not get better but can be helped with high Vit E and Vit B complex doses for 2 weeks

here is what to do
isolate her as if it is mareks she will sluff off the disease in her dander

then feed her twice a day for two weeks this
for her needs for bonned and nerve damage

WET MASH MEDICATED/VIT'S
3 tbsp of dry crumble feed
4 tbsp of milk any kind
1 tbspoon of yougart
1- Vit D tablet crushed ( smallest dosage)
1- calcium tablet crushed ( smallest dosage)
1-1000 mg Vit E cut tip off capsule and sqeeze it into the wet mash
1 Vit B complex crushed and put in the wet mash

mix all good
now put 1 tbsp of applesauce on top so she likes the wet mash

feed this twice a day for two weeks
when cleaned up in 30 minutes clean wet boewl and restock the dry feed

in her water give her 1 tbsp of ACV to qt od water
at all times
so she gets the Calcium and Vit D she needs in her system

any questions just email me and I will try and help you out

Thanks for the quick responses, Glenda and chicks4kids. Your assistance is very much appreciated. We are pursuing treatment for gapeworm at this time. I just hope we are not too late. I just don't understand the odd walk she is exhibiting. I don't know why I think it's not mareks: perhaps I'm just hoping it is not. Thanks again, and I'll try to provide an update if the results are positive.
