Over 4 weeks ago, one of my 2yo Golden comet hens presented with a very large swelling/hard mass underneath. She could barely walk and could not reach the feeder or waterer. This went on for a week. I feed/waterer her as I could. I felt inside her duct canal with a finger, and there was not an egg present. Her mass was below the canal. It was hard, not squishy. I ruled out water belly and impacted egg, because I thought if it were an egg, I'd have felt it with my finger in the canal. The mass went away about 2 weeks ago, but she was left weak and barely about to move. The other hens had tried to kill her so I separated her, hoping for a recovery. My flock is 20. It has been a week now and she is slowly making a little progress each day. She barely moves around still, but will eat and drink, moving very slowly. Her comb which was drooped and very pale is now more red and a little perky. I see this as a sign of getting healthy. She shakes her head suddenly at times. Any idea what is/was wrong with her? Thanks.

My guess is that she may have salpingitis in which masses of lash material from eggs that have crept back up the oviduct into the abdomen. Hard to know though. I would bring her close to her flock inside a dog crate with her own food and water. After a couple of days try to have supervised visits outside of her dog crate to get them reacquainted until she is able to join them. Salpingitis is an ongoing problem that can eventually kill them, but I have had a few live for a couple of years. It is common in good laying breeds. Extreme constipation, might also have been the mass. There are some graphic pictures of extreme salpingitis in some necropsy photos below:
