Hi there,

yesterday night my chicken was having trouble laying her egg. We could see it coming but it was almost as if it was stuck. As a last resort I lubricated my finger and tried to help get the egg out. What I found was a small piece of shell and then a whole lot of clear fluid. The Fluid had no smell and seemed to relieve the tension. about 20 minutes later i went to check on her and she has laid a shell less egg in the bottom of her house.

we offered her some food but she was no interested but instead found the shell which we had come out earlier and ate it. She wasnt lethargic just a little stressed I think but we put her to bed and she sat next to her other friend chicken.

I continued to check her throughout the night and her bottom was now a normal light pink healthy colour with no movement and no fluid coming out.

this morning when she did come out of her house she was a little hestitant to come out but slowely wandered out and drunk out of her bucket of water for about 5 minutes, had a nibble at her food and then went back to bed and put her head under her wing.

When i came home today she was walking around the backyard with my other chicken, her bottom still a healthy pink colour and was happy to eat some yohurt and fish as a snack. I also have seen her poop which hopefully means no blockages.

From what I hear chickens go through an autumn molt but chickens have not stopped laying and it is now winter. Although she seems quite healthy she is still not herself and a little out of sorts i suppose. she is currently on her perch whilst her friend is sleeping in the next.

I was to know what is going on> i have never come accross this situation before and am keen to know if she will be okay or if i need to be watching for other things.

I will continue to closely monitor her but some advice would be greatly appreciated..
ps. sorry about the large amount of text!!!!

sounds like she was egg bound maybe she has a broken egg inside and then she got a soft shelled egg she is probly sore so it will take her a bit of time to get back to her old ways just keep a good eye on her you did the right thing also is she getting any grit like oyster shells

umm well we always have a bucket of crushed up shells next to their house but they never seem to touch the stuff. But have gone to the pet shop abd bought someee today. I went out and visitied her before. she is still on her perch and seems to be alright, but still okay.

She is in much better shape this time tonight then she was last night. thankyou so much for replyiing!!! I am a very anxious motherrr hehe.
