I have a couple chicks with URIs, I’ve been treating with tiagard and terramycin and I’m not seeing any improvement. Is there anything else I should treat with or just wait it out?

Hi, sorry for your chicks.

How many days has it been with the Tiagard?

I would be sure to finish the recommended length of the antibiotic, and when done, be sure to give them probiotics daily for a couple of weeks. There are powders for their water, which is probably the easiest.

Are they eating and drinking?

Making a mash out of their crumbles usually goes over pretty well, as does scrambled eggs.

I'd also be putting Poultry Cell in their water to give them a boost of vitamins/minerals which'll help them fight this off.

Keep them warm and try get them to eat and drink. If you can't, we've got articles on how to syringe feed but hopefully they start improving.

Thank you for the reply! They started tiagard Sunday night so today will be their 5th day on it. They are still active and eating/drinking acting like nothings wrong aside from the sad looking eye and occasional sneezing. I’ve mixed rooster booster vitamins into their water as well and have been giving them eggs already. A few times a day I syringe their water onto their beaks to make sure they are getting plenty of it daily and they don’t even put up a fight, just sip their water, they are so sweet it breaks my heart. So hopefully I’m on the right track with this.

Awe! Well, if they're eating and drinking, they're on their way to being healthy again! 🎉

Tiagard is recommended to be given 3-5 days. Since they're still sneezing, I'd consider going the full five days. Are their eyes cleared up?

Don't forget to get some probiotics for them, as antibiotics kill off all the bacteria, good and bad, and their digestive systems can get messed up. If they get diarrhea from the antibiotic, that'll help that too.

You've got this! I'd love to see a picture of that one looking healthy!

I’ll order probiotics! Do you have a recommended brand? One chicks eye is looking much better, the other not so much, she scratches it so bad after I apply the ointment, maybe she’s injured it further? I’ll attach a few pictures of them, they are pretty much identical. Hoping I can post a fully healed chick soon!

Huge improvement!

Is that pus on the bottom of the eye of the chick on the right or just a swollen eyelid? I'd try some warm compresses on that one. Have you put Terramycin in it recently? That's really the best thing for it if it's an eye infection though, but maybe you're right and she injured it herself.

The powdered probiotics we bought initially was called Hydro Hen. This one has electrolytes in it too. One breeder recommended that to me. I've since repurchased that, and then one Durvat brand. There are dozens of them I've seen on Chewy and Amazon. I think I'd just pick one that has good reviews. :) They all pretty much get mixed in their water. I'd do it daily or every other day for a couple of weeks for sure. I put this or Poultry Cell vitamins in ours about once a week unless I am fermenting grains for them, as that's got a lot of probiotics and vitamins/minerals.

How are your chicks now? I have some sick ones that are currently on day 2 of tiagard. One is sooo congested she’s breaking my heart. Also all eating and drinking!

They are all better now! It took a long time to recover, I think I’ve done 3 rounds of tiagard. Idk if that’s recommended but it helped mine

Okay good to know! I feel like that’s what I’m going to have to do because we are on day 2 with little improvement. How long did you wait in between each dose of tiagard? I feel like I read online once a month?

I did like a week break in between. Saw no improvement the first round at all really, the eyes cleared up on the 2nd round and a couple days into the 3rd the sneezing and congestion finally stopped. I gave them vitamins and probiotics on the off weeks
