Two days ago I came home to a sick duck. She is a 9 month old female Fawn Runner with a runny nose and a swollen eye. One eye is crusty and almost swollen shut and the eyeball itself looks sunken. Her other eyelid was ripped and bleeding. I am not sure if it was pecked or she just cut it on something. She has discharge coming from her nostrils, kind of greyish fluid.

A week prior I had a few wrinkly eggs coming from some of my chickens. I was thinking it may be some kind of respiratory thing; a cold or conjunctivitis. I needed reccomendations on how to proceed. I cleaned her eyes and quarantined her to another coop. I am giving her eyes time to heal so that she isn't pecked further. I was thinking of doing a round of antibiotic food for everyone. Any suggestions on food or other remedies?

Alright well I don't know what I am doing wrong. I don't know if I smell, or spell things horribly, or sound like an idiot or what. I have tried several times posting various questions among other things about my chickens. I was very excited to find this place because no one around me has a passion for poultry like I do. I thought it would be fun to share with others who understand and care for this type of livestock as much as I do.

So far pretty much every question I have asked have been completly ignored. And it's not even like I am asking horrible left field questions.

So it's either me, or you. Either way I don't care to continue on with a message board like this. It's pitiful that there can be posts with 100 pages over someone incubating store bought eggs, yet a basic question about medicated feed can't be answered.

Good luck to your poultry, and to all of those who may be new to this board, I wouldn't waste my time here. You won't get any pertinent information.

If it's a bacterial infection, a round of antibiotics could definitely do some good. However, if it's a virus they won't help, unless they have a secondary bacterial infection, and the disease will just have to dun it's course. Either way, make sure they're staying well hydrated!

Sounds like IB

Getting crabby will not gain you help any faster, it just makes people think you have a bad attitude. People don't answer because they do not know the answer or don't spend lots of time on the computer every day reading the BYC forum. Do you want a bunch of 'I am so sorry for your birds, but I can't help you posts' just so you know someone is reading- that might make you feel better, but doesn't actually help you.

Anyway, the wrinkled shells and upper respiratory signs are very suspicious for IB (infectious bronchitis). Google that for specifics- but it is bad news if it is. Viral disease with no direct treatment, possible long term damage to the reproductive tract. Treatment is to cull, and start over with vaccinated birds. If you want a real diagnosis- contact your local poultry extension person or a vet who will deal with poultry and have a bird (deceased)sent in to the state lab for testing. This is generally a free service except for the shipping costs.

I think there is a sticky note at the top of the forum for info on finding where to ship and how to ship. Jess
