i have a pair of mallards that i have raised from birth. they in the pond on our farm along with 10 other american pekin ducks. they about 5 months old. i noticed yesterday when i went down to the pasture to feed them, the female mallard would walk a little and then act like she couldn't get her balance and then her wings would fly out and she would sit down and not move for a few minutes (even while the other ducks were eating). i also noticed her panting during this time. then she would get up and eat and drink like the rest of them for about 5-10 min and then do it again.
my first fear was botulism. but she seems to have full control of there neck muscles. i had a couple ducklings die from that and their necks went limp first.
i have moved her (and the male) into an enclosed pen (where i kept them until they were large enough for the pond) so i could give her clean water and watch her. when i checked on her this morning she was acting the same....seems fine for a little bit and then cant keep her balance and sits down. any suggestions of what this might be or what else i need to do for her? thanks!
