Sick duck

Childwanderer- I can see from your posts that you are very concerned for your duck- and want to do what ever you can to make sure it gets better. Please though just be very careful about any medication that you give such a young duckling- already I see on this thread so many different medications suggested to you- and treating with the wrong one could just complicate the issue further. It is extremely hard to diagnose a problem over the internet- and the only person who can realistically diagnose and prescribe treatment with antibiotics is a vet. Mixing different medications- or not knowing how much to use can be detrimental at times- but there are also some medications that can be used safely. I hope you do manage to get your duckling through this issue.

After approximately 48 hours of quarantine and observation, Carlotta is definitly better. The swelling has gone down, and she is eating eagerly. She seemed very anxious to return to her sisters and was pacing back and forth in her cage so I took her out of the rabbit hutch that served as her temorary dwelling. She flew out of my arms and ran to re-join the flock. She is doing fine, and I have not noticed any more symptoms of illness. No medication was administered to her at all.

I guess Carlotta just ate a toad or something after all!

This would make sense as I have noticed an abnormal number of toads dead on the road- there was even one on my driveway- in my neighberhood.

Thank you all for your help and information!
