Good morning. It’s been awhile since I have had to come for help so that’s good. We have 10 backyard chickens that are 11 months old now and have been doing great. They have all been healthy and laying well with 8 to 9 eggs a day .Sometimes 10.
This last week, one of our girls, a partridge rock, started to loose a lot of feathers. They were too young to molt last fall so we were hoping it was just some sort of spring
molt . She acted normal, was eating and drinking and loved getting out to free range each day with the warmer weather. She was also still laying. We checked her over and cant see any signs of bugs , lice or mites so thought we would wait it out. Last night when we checked on them , she was in the nest box after all the others were on the roost . This was the first sign of odd behaviour. We tried several times to place her on the roost bar but she jumped right down and went back to the nest box. When handling her my wife noticed a huge ,egg sized ,lump on her chest . We though maybe it might just be a full craw???? We left her for the night and this morning it is still there. She is now refusing to get out of the nest box and is very lethargic. This lump was not there two days ago for sure as we checked her head to toe for lice. And yesterday mid day she was out and acting normal but by the end of the day we found this problem. Could it be an impacted craw ? What can we do ? Is the lump and the lose of feather related ,mor just a coincidence ? Any help would be appreciated.
