Last week the juvenile hen presented with gunky eyes and I separated her and gave her Terramycin eye gel medication until her eyes cleared up (twice a day for a few days). I returned her to the flock. Things seemed fine. I've been diligent to check the flock's eyes when we put them up at night particularly.

This morning, one of her eyes is closed and there are growths on her closed eye and all over her head (see photos). The eye with the growth that's closed also has discharge.

I've isolated her again. She's alert, interested in food and water, and otherwise seems OK. I have not given her anymore of the antibiotic yet.

Have any of you experienced this illness before? Does anyone know what is afflicting this poor chicken?

Have you had mosquitoes out recently? It looks like she might have the sunken eye appearance of mycoplasma (MG,) a respiratory infection in her left eye. The scabs look like fowl pox, a virus spread by mosquitoes. It lasts about 3 weeks, and most recover. I would keep applying the Terramycin into both eyes twice a day. Of course, make sure that she can open her eyes, and clean out any drainage or pus, but try not to disturb the pox scabs too much because that may spread the virus. Dried up scabs that fall off are contagious to other chickens.

You may see others in your flock with pox. If she seems very sick and is not eating, look inside her beak and throat with a light for any yellow patches. Wet pox can cause that and that type of pox is much more serious. The dry form is usually not fatal. Here is some reading about fowl pox:

Are you able to get Tylan (tylosin) or oxytetracycline to treat your hen for MG? Here is a link where they might have it in stock:

Here is doxycycline powder which also can be used to treat MG in chickens:
