My 2 year old peacock has come down with a respiratory problem; he is gasping with each breathe. Since peafowl are fairly new to me and have never been ill I am hesitant to treat him without someone of experience guidance in what to do. He has been fine until this morning. The weather here has been cold and wet and now freezing. The peahens look fine.

How is the ventilation overhead where he is kept? Are you seeing any swelling of an eyelid, or bubbles/foam in an eye? Enrofloxacin or Baytril might be something to give him, since does not lay eggs. Dosage of 10% enrofloxacin is 0.05 ml per pound twice a day for 5 days. You can get it here:

Tylan or tylosin, oxyteracyclines are also good in case of mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG.) If the symptoms are from a virus, it may run it’s course over time. Good ventilation, no ammonia odors or dust can help a lot. Get a weight if possible. @casportpony is familiar with pea fowl.

They free range and until last night roosted in a huge pine in the backyard. Last night was the first time I saw the peafowl go in the coop for the night in months.

No bubbles or swelling or weight loss.

Thanks again.
