I went out today after work, and one of my males looked like he was sleeping. I picked him up, and he was kinda stiff but still breathing. Like he was in a coma. He was fine last night. And we don't have any chickens anywhere close by. But he would not move, so I just culled him. But does this sound like anything to worry about?? All the other birds seem healthy. So I am hoping there is no disease going through my Cortunix quail.

Thanks for any help! Dave

Hard to say. Your state will offer a necropsy program but for gamebirds there is usually a cost. It is possible for many diseases to incubate in soil or to be transmitted through bugs even without the presence of chickens. A necropsy is really the only way to know for sure if he was sick or just suffering from some sort of condition he has had since he hatched. They do suffer from things like strokes or heart attacks same as us.

My ex used to wear these sandals with little bells on them one of our chickens at the time decided to have one of those bells for dinner. It choked on it and had to be culled . Point is sometimes they choke on things too.

I agree with QuailRaiser...sounds like your bird flushed up into the ceiling and hit his head. But like DC says here, only a necropsy will tell you exactly how he died. I would give all your birds a good once over for any tell tale signs of illness in case this was something contagious.

So sorry about your bird.
