I have a beautiful silkie roo that is about 5 or 6 months old. He got into it with my Cochin roo a few months ago and he got his eye pecked out. It was infected, so I gave him Tylan 50 for a few days. He recovered with the infection coming back every once in a while. I picked him to pet him the other day and he was more docile than normal. I dropped him to the ground gently and he fell over like I hurt his leg. I felt awful! I picked him back up and he was acting funny. I then noticed he had mites and his eye had a white cheeseball in it. I brought him in and cleaned his eye. I used De for the mites, didn't work so I used pryrethrian (Sp?). That helped. Have been giving him 3/4 cc of Tylan 50 for 4 days and saw a little improvement. He is moving his head funny and he sitting back on his butt. He is hardly eating. He did eat some eggs, they love eggs! Is there any hope? I cannot cull him. I don't know what to do! I really mentally cannot do it!

So sorry to hear about your rooster. :(

Tylan 50 is for respiratory infections and probably won't help what you've got going on.

It sounds like his eye has gotten very infected... You'll need to get that cheese puss OUT of there or it could kill him. Grab a pair of tweezers, some q-tips, and warm saline water.

Do your best to soften the puss with the saline water and start digging ... gently. If it starts bleeding, stop, let him rest, and try again after a little while.

If he's gone off food and water, you may have to tube him liquids and food for him to survive. Get a 60cc syringe from Tractor Supply and some silicon aquarium tubing from PetCo/Petsmart. Get some Pedialyte from Walgreens and watch a few videos on how to tube a chicken. If he's eating and drinking, ignore this.

Once you get the infection out (it may take two or three tries), pack it with antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn eye ointment and make sure he keeps eating and drinking (or tube him).

Let us know how it goes.

Can you post a picture? Also, I know you hate to hear this, but sometimes it is better for the animal to cull it. It is an extremely difficult situation and choice and I feel your pain. But sometimes you need to realize that your are keeping an animal alive for yourself and not thinking about the quality of the creature's life. It is in our nature to try our best, but sometimes we need to step down and let nature take its course. Please try to post a pic. praying for your roo.
Best of luck,

I tried to cull him but I could cut anything but feathers on his throat. So I got the ax and some wood to lay hI'm on. I couldnt do it. So I went to my neighbor who I actually hAve never met and asked him. He did it for me. He said it was quick and painless. He brought back for a proper burial. :-(
